The start of operations at EDP has contributed significantly to the ENERGY INDEPENDENCE of El Salvador.
Located in the Port of Acajutla, EDP is a 380MW “LNG to Power” energy infrastructure project, which began operations on May 1, 2022. EDP is the first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project in El Salvador and northern Central America, supplying more than 30% of El Salvador’s energy demand.
EDP contributes to the country’s energy diversification, as it complements El Salvador’s present and future renewable generation and reduces dependence on the generation of energy through less environmentally friendly fuels.
EDP represents the largest private investment in the history of El Salvador at more than USD $1.15 billion.
U.S.-based Invenergy is the majority shareholder of EDP and has led the development of the project in partnership with El-Salvador based partners Grupo Calleja, VC Energy de Centroamerica and Quantum Energy.
Leading global financial institutions—US International Development Finance Corporation, International Finance Corporation, IDB Invest, Finnish Export Credit Ltd and KfW IPEX-Bank—are lenders to the project.
EDP began operations on May 1, 2022, becoming the largest and most efficient generation plant in the country, and introducing natural gas for electricity generation for the first time in the history of El Salvador
